Thesis Review

The "Inner Space" BFA Thesis show was by far a huge success. I got tons of creative feedback from my peers, faculty, family and friends. Not only was I pleased with how the presentation of my work turned out, but the show as a whole was wonderful!

Throughout the semester I was lucky enough to discuss my work with my photography professor, Kate Pollard. We worked together over the past year developing my ideas and she helped me a lot with the presentation of my work as well. During our final critique of my work in the gallery we discussed placement and presentation of the sculptural piece (the dress) and the photographs. We tried to put ourselves in the position of the outside viewer to come to conclusions about what message is being presented.

Many agree that my dress could stand alone as a piece in itself, and deliver it's own message along with the title (Wasteful Wedding). The photographs look a bit less overdramatized and it was suggested that if i was to continue this idea, that the images are just as dramatic and exaggerated as the dress itself. (Though that was a great point!)

During my critique someone mentioned the notion of damaging the dress with wine, cake, etc. Here are a few images that I am looking at for inspiration.

Yesterday I had my final group critique before the show in two weeks. Mostly everything is made for display but i have 2 decisions to make. Some people suggested that instead of displaying the dress on a chair to create an interior space, I should put the dress on a bodice as if it was in a shop window.
Concerning photographs, depending on which display i choose I want to either continue with the fancy depictions of the dress and accessories or take photos of wiping my mouth with the dress, blotting lipstick, eating cake and drinking wine. Performing "wedding-like" actions or almost destructive actions. Any feedback would be helpful.. thanks !

Now that most of my paper things are done being made I'm experimenting with different light and tone for my photographs... here are some snap shots.

Crit 2/4

Today I had my first critique of the semester and the feedback was really helpful. Even though I am a photo concentration I now feel confident that my paper pieces will successfully work in the show. I am somewhat prepared and ready but I still question how I should display my photographs in the gallery space. Do I put them in an album for audience interaction or hang them on a wall? Or should I include them at all? Any suggestions would be wonderful.

Before going into the discussion about my work I felt like I was not prepared compared to most of my peers but the hardest parts are almost done. Photographically I am not sure if my images will be strong enough to display on the wall and I plan o

n having some taken by the next critique to present to everyone. Megan suggested that I create other paper pieces that will not be included in the show, or to create a whole paper installation. If the photographs are successful enough I am not sure if I will have time to create a paper chair and coffee table but we will see. I’m also going to start writing about how I personally take the whole wedding concept to better understand why I’m working with this subject matter.

This weekend I am going to finish my paper flowers and begin crocheting the rug. Once I finally have everything done I will be able to start taking pictures.
